At Long Last: the Baptism

The morning after Emery's party, the family and a few close friends gathered at our church to do something we've been meaning to do since Alastair was born: baptize our children. We kept meaning to do it but we didn't have a church home yet and then one day we turned around and we had two children and still no baptism. Our church was happy to do a double header after the 11:00 service the same weekend we had everyone in town for Emery's party.

The kids did really well during the ceremony itself. Dr. Simmons told us that Emery, who was on stranger high alert after being the center of attention all weekend, "entered the Kingdom" the same way he did: yelling. All things considered, the crying was minimal and for Emery with anyone resembling a grandparent, that is worth noting.

Alastair was really taken with the idea of baptism. As Methodists, we don't believe that baptism is the key to heaven or anything, but rather a formal giving of thanks and a commitment to raise the kids with religion in their lives. Nonetheless, he thought it was quite cool and he has been baptizing things right and left. I've been baptized once this week myself.

Emery: "Did someone say cake?"

After church, my parents hosted a luncheon at their house to celebrate. After a super busy weekend filled with parties, soccer games, guests, and to-do lists as tall as I am, it was really nice to kick back with a delicious lunch, complete with cake and even homemade mac and cheese for the kids. It was a nice way to wrap up a busy weekend.
